“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.’” (Proverbs 31:28-29)
Happy Mother’s Day!
Mothers Day became a national holiday in 1914. However, we know from historical documents, including the Bible, that mothers have been held in high esteem for much longer than that. This piece honors moms and mother figures of all kinds.
Hugs from Mom
For all you out there who someone calls “MOM”… your hugs are something special.
Your hugs have the ability to chase away monsters and (hopefully) earn you some well-deserved peace and quiet after bedtime.
Your hugs ease the pain of scraped knees, wounded hearts, and broken promises.
Your hugs bring immense joy and wide smiles to you and your children.
Your hugs have the power to assure safety and instill confidence, even in those times when you aren’t so sure of it yourself.
Your hugs remind your children of your love for them, which echoes God’s love for each and every one of us.
We thank you for your devotion to your children and the sacrifices you make for them every day.
There are some who long for the opportunity to give these special hugs.
Those whose lives have not, for a variety of reasons, led them to the opportunity to experience motherhood.
Those whose children escaped their embrace and have yet to return to it.
And those who weep for children lost to them due to miscarriage, sickness, or tragedy.
We embrace you as you mourn the emptiness in your arms.
And there are many who long for hugs from their moms.
Orphans who don’t know their birth moms or who never found forever homes.
Children whose relationships with their mothers are complicated or nonexistent.
Adults who are estranged from their mothers and can’t find their way home.
Many of us right now who can only wave to our moms through a screen.
And sons and daughters who long for just one more hug from their moms, who death has taken away from them.
We hold you tightly as you ache from missing your mom.
Today, as we honor those women we call Mom, we thank God for their hugs, their smiles, their laughs, their love, and even their “mom looks”.
It doesn’t matter whether you gave birth, adopted, or assumed the role of mother for a child in your life… please know that your guidance and love for your children have changed the world. Your hugs are special. And, whether it’s in a few weeks or when we see you in Heaven, we can’t wait to run into your arms again.
