A Prayer for Refinement

This prayer is based on 1 John 1:5-10.

God’s Word – 1 John 1: 5-10

God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

Prayer on 1 John 1:5-10

Dear Lord,

I am humbled and blessed to be your child. You, my Heavenly Father, bring light to my world. Without you, there is only darkness.

But how easily I forget this! Instead of embracing Your light, I stay in the darkness of my sin. I think I can’t be forgiven for what I’ve done. Or, I intentionally choose the paths I know you wouldn’t want me to walk. I want to think I’ve got it all together. I want to believe I’m perfect and don’t need saving. But Your Word works in my heart through the Holy Spirit so I understand how untrue this is. Worst of all, I don’t acknowledge or recognize my sinfulness. Not only do I sin against those around me, but I sin against you. My biggest enemy is the sin within me.

God, I need your help. Please hear my prayer and speak truth into me through your Word and those around me. Help me to understand how much I need my Savior, your Son. Refine me into who I’m intended to be as your child. Guide me to walk in the light of Christ.

Forgive me for the things I say and do, and for those things I leave unsaid and undone. Cleanse my heart, and assure me of your forgiveness. Because of grace through faith in Jesus, I know I am reconciled to you.

In his name, Amen.
